Children are more likely to own a cell phone than a book.

An interesting new article on the Telegraph’s website illustrates how children ages 7-16 are more likely to own a mobile phone than they are a book.

“According to figures, some 80 per cent of children with better than expected reading skills had their own books, compared with just 58 per cent who were below the level expected for their age group.

The disclosure follows the publication of a study found that found keeping just 20 books in the home could boost children’s chances of doing well at school.”

Parents can do their children a great service by simply having books in the home. Books can be inexpensive (and free!) as well. The Friends of the Frisco Public Library have a year round book sale in the library and donated books are available for really low prices, ranging from 50 cents to 2 dollars. Also, many stores offer free books for completing summer reading programs, like Barnes and Noble.
